"plaNet Former"
It has been only about 10 years since WWW appeared and there arecountless sites and links that have been posted. Certain sites havesurvived continuously, with their contents being renewed and theyhave passed through different spaces and frontiers. The situation that these links have flourished could be said as a kindof self-organization process, as Manuel de Landa described.
"PlaNet Former" utilizes as it's resource, the various pre-existing linksand structures and sites on the Internet. In this work, the various websiteslinks flatly as nodes, with no inherent structure of content nor meaning, ina vast constellation of horizontal structure, creating a virtual space thatis not unlike the universe. The thing that allows this to happen is the"Former Agent (FA)", and it visualizes the tracks left behind by the visitorsof the websites into a form of a plaNet.
The formation of the plaNet begins with the accessing individual inputting aURL address. FA (Former Agent) will arrive at the designated site andrandomly searches out any links that are connected to the designated websitevia links. If there are links to other websites, then the agent will connectwith it. If there are no further links, the agent will connect to anotherlink by accessing its memory bank of all previous journeys. By the verynature of most materials on the Internet such as e-mail and other networks, they have a set designation. On the contrary, FA has a random designationand the process has neither target nor and ending.
The accessing individual first sets a URL address (any will do) and sets thesize of the plaNet and the sphere's rate of occupation. Then immediately FAwill show a formation of a thin line and then begin to illustrate the chainof links it has travelled through on the surface of the sphere. On thescreen you will see the duration and the rate of occupation of the plaNet.You will also see the other details such as URL addresses of all the linksit has visited as well as a visual illustration of the formation progress.Just relax, don't rush and just let the universe grow.
FA is able to work with multiple agents, and it will chase around the randomsites across the pre-existing global network. A working agent's positionwill be displayed and the PlaNet's formal progress will appear as abiological development. There is a button that allows you to follow thelinks that the agent follows in real time, at a fast changing, frequentrate.
This algorithmical method, the body lets the dancer move freely as much asit can subconsciously is an idea that W. Forsythe has suggested. Is therenot a parallel between this method that liberates the body parts from anyhierarchy, forgetting the conscious and the form and allowing the body to befree, to that of the sensation of dance? Without any purpose, the PlaNet'sdevelopment is in the hands of the "plaNet Former." The multiple Agents donot rely on the accessing individual's intentions and targets, but runs freein the Internet. We would like to observe this open-ended architecturalprocess.
