Old Ginza was once a town of rivers and canals. Sukiyabashi (Sukiya Bridge) is the symbol of this era. When the wooden bridge was burnt down by the Great Earthquake fires, Sukiyabashi was rebuilt using stone.
A small plaza made at the foot of the bridge soon became a popular meeting point to head for Ginza. A popular radio drama written by playwright Kazuo Kikuta made this place nationally famous. Unfortunately, no trace of Old Sukiyabashi can be found now, since the canal was buried and the bridge torn down after the War, to be made into an expressway.
