Some people think modern roses have no rich perfume, but actually, many are endowed
with wonderful scents. Lately, interest towards the scent of modern roses is growing.
Rose shows are where rosarians exhibit their favorites.
The first rose show of post-war Japan, held in May 1948 at Shiseido in Ginza, was
organized by the famed Japanese breeder Shozo Suzuki, among others. Presently, there
are various rose societies in Japan that actively organize rose shows, accompanied
by a fragrance contest. Here, blooms are classified and judged not only by color
and shape, but also by fragrance.
In the fragrance contest, the intensity of each scent is judged in the first screening.
In the second screening, judges evaluate whether the scent is pleasant, fresh and
delightful, and decide on 10 or so winners. The prize offered is Shiseido's luxurious
fragrance line "Rosarium" that smells of relaxing roses - a well-deserved
prize indeed for growers of fragrant roses.
