Rosa damascena and Rosa centifolia are the species of roses used as bases for essential
oil, but few people are familiar with these species since they are not cultivated
in Japan.
Flowering roses and roses for essence belong to two different categories. Essence
roses have a exuberantly sweet, smothering note, whereas the sweetness of modern
roses is lighter and more refreshing. What is now widely recognized as "the
typical scent of roses" is that of a flower we hardly ever see.
