Scents of the stamen and pistil
|
Out of more than 1000 horticultural varieties of camellias cultivated in Japan, only about 50 possess distinctive scents. Moreover, their delicate smell can only be detected by careful smelling. Nevertheless, efforts are being made by ardent breeders to produce a brand new generation of fragrant, gorgeous camellias by pollination of perfumed indigenous blooms. Perhaps one day, the camellia may be known as the "Queen of Fragrance."
Shiseido laboratories have ventured to find out the exact origin of this subtle scent. By dissecting fragrant camellias petal by petal, a perfumer found that the source of the scent was found at the base of the stamen filaments, ovary and the pistil, and floral nectar was being secreted abundantly to form dews on the petals.
