| Beautiful body with fragrance |
 The three great beauties of China are Xiang Fei, Yang Kuei-fei, and Hsi Shih. In addition to their exceptional beauty, they were all famous for their rich and delicate body scents. As exemplified by these women, "a body that sends forth fragrant perfume" is highly esteemed in China. Likewise in Japan, Lady Kaoru of the "Tale of Genji" is also said to emit a heavenly scent. When the late Japanese writer Yasushi Inoue went to Kashgar and asked the old villagers about Xiang Fei's bodily aroma, he was told that it was "the exquisite perfume of the Saso (fragrant olive) flower." As the legend goes, the scent intrinsic to Xiang Fei seems to have been that of Saso native to her hometown. |
