Shiseido began the production of sodium hyaluronate in 1985. The production is based on fermentation with Streptococcus zooepidemicus, a bacterium, and does not involve extraction from animal organs, such as cockscomb or umbilical cords. Being approved as a cosmetic ingredient to be used for "ELIXIR Essence" on October, 1984, sodium hyaluronate has been formulated in many of Shiseido's products as a moisturizer. It also has received high evaluations from many companies of all over the world that use it for their products.
