About "Anchoring humectant" [Stratum corneum softening effect]

Relative elasticity of stratum corneum

Sheets of stratum corneum to which were applied either water, 0.2% aqueous solution of HA, or 0.2% aqueous solution of AcHA, were applied in a continuous dynamic viscoelasticity measuring instrument which, at a temperature of 25 degrees C and humidity 50%, can continuously monitor the elastic modulus of stratum corneum. When applied on the skin, water or sodium hyaluronate softens stratum corneum temporarily. Elasticity of the skin, however, will return to the initial level as water diffuses away by its vaporization. On the contrary, sodium acetyl hyaluronate solution shows a long duration of the corneum softening effect.

Relative electric conductivity on the skin surface

In a room at fixed temperature of 25 degrees C and humidity of 50%, electric conductivity on the skin surface of volunteer was measured with a skin surface hygrometer. The measurement of electric conductivity suggests a long-lasting water retentivity of sodium acetyl hyaluronate at a higher level, in comparison with hyaluronate.

Relative water vaporization through skin

After being damaged by surfactant, the rough inner side of volunteer's forearms was treated with samples (HA or AcHA) once a day for seven days. The lotion containing sodium acetyl hyaluronate shows an improved "occlusion" effect, or suppression of water vaporization, over that containing sodium hyaluronate.
