[Cosmetics Support Technology Development] Powderer Technology

Powder raw material is used in several cosmetics, including foundations, lipsticks, and sunscreen lotions. Shiseido has been focusing on "beautiful finish", "good feeling on use", and "skin protection from UV rays and dryness" in its research and development activities.
In the area of surface treatment, Shiseido independently developed the "nano-coating technology" in 1988 to treat the powder surface with an ultrathin film. The technology improved the functions of cosmetics in various ways: the color production and dispersibility of colored powder were improved and the smell change was reduced.

Technology innovation with the concept "light control"

"Raygenic Powder" was developed in 1991 using an innovative technology. The powder itself senses the intensity of light (UV ray) and changes its color tone to create a natural finish. In 2000, the "color rendering powder" was developed by combining the Raygenic technology with the color change of a pearlescent pigment, getting a hint from the paintings of Rembrandt who was called a magician of light. The color rendering powder does not cause white masking in camera flashlights, changing its tone and lightness simultaneously in reaction to the light intensity. A beautiful finish to the skin can be maintained in a variety of light environments, including fluorescent light and sunlight. Color rendering powder

Powder development with the new concept of "skin care effect"

Recent powder development technologies have been applied widely to the development of skin care products. The "skin care powder SCZ," launched in 2001, is a compound powder of zinc oxide coated with nano-level thin silica film. The innovative ingredient that prevents roughening of the skin was developed using a new concept, to absorb and inhibit the enzyme urokinase that triggers the development of rough skin. Developed based on various technologies from the fields of dermatological science, powder science, and formulation technology, the research paper reporting the development of this ingredient received the Best Research Paper Award at the 2002 Congress of the International Federation of Societies of Cosmetic Chemists (IFSCC).

Latest powder-synthesizing technology to control the morphology and create new feeling of improved quality and function

Shiseido uses the world's most advanced powder-synthesizing technology. With the latest nanotechnology to control the surface morphology at a micro level, a variety of compound powders with a new feeling of improved quality and function has been developed. "Clear Quality Powder" composed of the interference pearlescent pigment coated with the feathered zinc oxide gives the skin a dry, translucent feeling by absorbing/solidifying sebum, while "Forming Powder" composed of spherical moss-like coated barium sulfate, creates a youthful look with well-defined facial features. "Powder with reflection board-effect," composed of small particle-like coated barium sulfate, changes color from reddish luster to whitish foggy depending on the angle of the incident light. The powder successfully creates a youthful skin appearance with an optical lift-up effect that gives the finished skin a highly translucent resilience and brightness to diminish sagging and wrinkle lines. The research paper reporting this technology received the Best Research Paper Award at the 2005 Conference of the International Federation of Societies of Cosmetic Chemists (IFSCC).
