シュルレアリスムの写真家たちも謎めいたオブジェとしてマネキンを撮った。

人形を遊び相手にしながら、自分も人形になることを求めているのかもしれない。

個性も表情もなく、心はうつろなのに、不思議に身近な存在。秘密の分身がここにいる。

いまは人形の時代かもしれない。伝統的な人形から創作人形まで、流行のこけしやマトリョーシカからキャラクター人形や各種フィギュアまで、いたるところに人形がいる。おそらく日本の人形人口（？）は人間よりもずっと多いのではなかろうか。 人形はもともと人間の分身として生まれたもので、観賞対象になったり愛玩物や話相手になったりと、いろんな役を演じてくれる。だがマネキン人形となるとやや特殊だろう。　はじめから用途がきまっていて、居場所もふつうは店舗に限られるからである。　それなのに不思議な魅力がある。アジェの古きよきパリの写真にうつった窓のマネキンは神秘的に見えるし、シュルレアリスムの写真家たちも謎めいたオブジェとしてマネキンを撮った。人間に似ていながら生命をもたない彼女たちの姿に、近代の「新しい美」を感知していたのだろう。　絵画の世界でも、デ・キリコは人間のかわりにマネキンを描き、内面のうつろな近代人の分身に見立てた。マグリットの場合は、人間そのものをマネキンのように無個性に描く。人間もマネキンと同様、交換可能な道具にすぎないかのように。　マネキンというのはフランス語のマヌカンの英語読みだが、もとは「小人間」「人形」を意味するオランダ語だった。転じて人体模型やマネキン人形の意になったが、最近ではファッションモデルのこともマヌカンという。マヌカン＝モデル、つまり人形になりかわれる人間ということか。　いまや内面にうんざりした人間は、人形を遊び相手にしながら、自分も人形になることを求めているのかもしれない。個性も表情もなく、心はうつろなのに、不思議に身近な存在。秘密の分身がここにいる。(巖谷國士/仏文学者、批評家)

I feel that we have now moved into the era of dolls. From traditional dolls to custom-made dolls, fashionable Japanese wooden kokeshi dolls, Russian matryoshka dolls, character-based dolls and figurines, dolls can be found everywhere around us. We can probably go as far as to say that the population of dolls in Japan is higher than that of people. Dolls were originally created as doubles of humans and play many different roles in our lives, for instance, as decorative objects, treasured objects, or as companions with whom to talk. Mannequins, on the other hand, are a special case because they were created for a specific purpose and are usually only found on display at stores. Even so, mannequins have a strange sort of charm. The photographs taken by Atget of mannequins in the store windows of Old Paris were mysterious; surrealist photographers also took photographs of mannequins as enigmatic objects. These photographers probably felt a new and modern sense of beauty in these human-like but lifeless female forms. In the world of painters, Giorgio de Chirico used faceless mannequins to represent the human condition. Rene Magritte’s work featured humans as mannequin-like forms who lacked individuality. It is as though humans, like mannequins, are nothing more than interchangeable tools. Although mannequin in English is pronounced the same as the French word mannequin, the word originally comes from the Dutch manikin, meaning “little man” or “doll.” By extension, the word came to be associated with life-sized anatomical human models and mannequins, and recently the word is also used to refer to fashion models. Mannequin=model; in other words mannequins are people who can transform into dolls. Nowadays, perhaps people who are fed up with the world regard dolls as their companions while wishing they could become dolls themselves. Dolls lack individuality, facial features or souls, yet we feel strangely connected to them. They are our secret doubles. (Kunio Iwaya/ Scholar of French literature and critic)

Sabrina Bongiovanni (1978) is an Amsterdam based photographer, known for her abstract take on fashion and portrait photography and minimalist, colorful images. She easily shifts from artistic photography to applied work for a wide range of clients. Her work is characterized by a strong conceptual cornerstone, a significant role for the background and a sharp graphic style.Bongiovanni works for international (fashion) magazines and frequently participates in international art exhibitions and festivals. Her 2002 graduation series from the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague was awarded with the Bernd & Hilla Becher young talent price.
