絵を描くことが唯一得意なことだったので美大に進学しアーティストを志すのは自然な流れでした。衣服やテキスタイルが好きだったため、最初はファッションデザイナーを目指したのですが、学んでいくうちに絵を描くことの方がより好きだと気づきました。
The only thing I was good at was drawing so it seemed natural to go to art school and try and make a go of it. At first, I thought I would be a fashion designer as I loved clothes and textile design but the more I studied I realized how much I enjoyed drawing.
ロンドンのセントラル・セント・マーチンで美術を学び、後にロイヤルカレッジ・オブ・アートで学びました。2004年に卒業後、ロンドン・ブリッジのそばにあったスタジオに越してフリーランスとしての活動を始めました。初期のクライアントはTOPSHOPやCowshedなどイギリスを中心としたブランドで、その頃からペンやインクを使ったハンド・ドローイングを得意としています。2009年に子供向けの遊び絵本「My Wonderful World of Fashion」を初めて出版しました。それ以来、出版社Laurence Kingとずっと仕事をしています。現在はそのシリーズとして「自然」についての本を制作しています。
I started my art education at Central Saint Martins and then years later at the Royal College of Art, both in London. After graduating from the Royal College of Art in 2004, I moved into a studio above the Clink Prison Museum in London Bridge and set up as a freelance illustrator. My first clients were the clothes shop TOPSHOP and the beauty brand, Cowshed. I developed a hand drawn style using dip pens and ink. In 2009, I published my first book, "My Wonderful World of Fashion", an activity book for children. I have been working with the publisher Laurence King ever since, working on further books and products for children. Currently I'm working on a nature book which has been a fantastic job for me since I love drawing plants and flowers.

素晴らしく古風で、最高にモダン、という相反する印象を持っています。まだ訪れたことがありませんので、それらは全て映画、本、そして食べ物から受けた印象です。映画は小津、黒澤等の昔の映画から、『タンポポ』、『ノルウェイの森』、『TOKYO!』まで幅広く見ています。『AKIRA』も学生の頃に見て衝撃を受けました。何よりも日本食が大好きです！日本はいつか必ず訪れてみたい場所です。
The impression I have of Japan is that it is both wonderfully ancient and super modern at the same time. Since I have never been to Japan, my impressions are from films, books and the food I've eaten. I like old movies by Ozu and Kurosawa and modern films "Tampopo", "Norwegian Wood" and "Tokyo!". Also the animated films like "AKIRA", which I saw in art school and I remember being so wowed by.Most of all, I love Japanese food. It is so, so delicious! I would love to visit one day.
自然は美しいです。これについての作品に数年かけて取り組んだ今、自然界の複雑さ、多様さ、インスピレーションに富んだ美しさに本当に常々驚かされます。一枚の葉でさえ、なんと美しいことか。一日中見つめていられます。
I think nature is beautiful. After having worked on the subject for the past year, I am constantly amazed at the complexity, variety and awe-inspiring beauty of the natural world. Even something as simple as a leaf is so beautiful to me. I could stare at it all day!

Born in Calcutta, India, Nina Chakrabarti went to the UK to study art at Central Saint Martins and at Royal College of Art. She currently works as a freelance illustrator and her long list of clients includes TOPSHOP, Habitat, V＆A, and Somerset House. In 2009, she released her first fashion book called "My Wonderful World of Fashion" (published by Laurence King). Currently, she is working on producing a new series of books on nature.
