小さい頃は人と話すより、ひとりで空想に浸るのが大好きで、空や植物や虫に話しかけたり、絵を描いたり、雪が降るともくもくと雪だるまを作ったりして、ひとりで遊ぶことを全く苦に感じませんでしたね。

As a child, rather than talking with people, I preferred to be inside my imagination, talking to the sky, plants and insects, drawing pictures, and pouring my energy into making a snowman every time it snowed. Playing by myself never bothered me.

はじめの憧れは漫画家でした。そのうち漠然と絵を描く仕事をしたいと思うようになって、高校生の時にデザインという分野があることを知り、東京藝術大学のデザイン科を目指し入学します。当時将来は電通や博報堂でアートディレクターになるつもりだったのですが、友人とのグループ展でシャツの作品を作った事がきっかけで、最後に人が着ることで作品として完成する服の制作に喜びと関心が高まり、服を作り始めるようになりました。コマーシャルや雑誌の仕事に取り組むようになってから、舞台衣装や商品開発、テレビ番組のセットなどからも声がかかるようになって、ジャンルがどんどんと広がっています。

At first, I wanted to become a manga artist. Gradually, I developed an interest in drawing pictures for a living, and after learning about the field of design when I was a senior high school student, I aimed for and got accepted into the Department of Design at the Tokyo University of the Arts. At that time, my future goal was to become an art director at Dentsu or Hakuhodo, but a shirt that I made during a group exhibition I held with a friend while still a university student spurred my joy and interest in making clothes, a piece of art that becomes complete once someone puts it on. That’s when I started making clothes. As I started working on commercials and magazines, I began getting offers to work on stage costumes, product development, TV program sets, and on a diverse and growing number of other projects.

ギフトにはいろいろな情景や気持ちを想像することができるので、ひとつひとつに自分なりのストーリーを加えながら考えました。幼いころにもらった懐かしい感じ、使うことで変化していくものの様子。うれしかったことや、ほろ苦い思い出……いろいろな気持ちを込めたくて、なるべく細かく手間をかけて繊細に作り上げました。また、ギフトと人がひとつになるように、服はそれを包んでいるパッケージのイメージで作ってみようと考えました。だからあえて包装紙のように１枚の布を折りたたんだり、くしゃくしゃにしつつ、でも絶対に切らないように試みています。リボンは布をまとめるためと、ギフトラッピングであることを想起させるためのアクセントにしています。

Gifts can evoke a myriad of scenes and feelings, so I injected my own stories into each detail. I meticulously crafted the set with as much details as possible in order to channel a medley of emotions such as gifts that brought a sense of nostalgia for my childhood, the process of how things evolved through use, memories of joy and bitterness. I also wanted to create an image that a piece of clothing was a package that bound the gift and receiver together as one. That’s why I used one piece of cloth and folded it up like wrapping paper, or crumpled it up without ever cutting it. The ribbon is used to keep the cloth together and as an accent to evoke a sense that the cloth is part of the gift wrapping.

仕事の条件の中で、自分が楽しみながら制作できるような要素を加えていくこと。 依頼にそのまま応えるのではなく、少しひねりを加えます。相手が驚く様子を見るのが好きなので、自分なりの解釈、発想や工夫を必ず盛り込むようにしています。

I need to add an element of fun into my production work. I don’t just blindly do what is requested, but I like to add a little twist to my work. I enjoy surprising my clients, so I always try to incorporate my interpretation and imagination into my creations.

服は出来上がってもそのままでは抜け殻です。そこに人の体が入って、初めて服が呼吸をはじめます。そして人がその服を着ることで、いつもの日常から変身するとき、とても感動します。非日常の服なのに服に負けない人に出会ったときに美を感じます。

When I finish making a piece of clothing, it’s an empty shell that only comes to life for the first time when someone puts it on. I feel very excited when I see someone’s everyday life transformed by wearing this item. I feel beauty when I encounter a person who is not outshined by an extraordinary piece of clothing.

これまでは依頼されてから作るスタンスでいましたが、今後は自分から発信する機会を増やしたいと思い至るようになりました。そこで「LIVE BONE」というダンスパフォーマンスを森山開次さん、川瀬浩介さんと３人で立ち上げて活動したり、ものを作る喜びを子供にも大人にも伝えたくて、小さな生きものをテーマにワークショップを始めたりしています。いまではいろんな人を巻き込んで楽しい活動に広がっています。

Up till now, I started production once I received an order, but going forward, I want to increase opportunities to create and launch my own work. This has led me to join forces with Kaiji Moriyama and Kohske Kawase in a dance performance project called “LIVE BONE,” and also to start a workshop based on the theme of small creatures to spread the joy of creation to children and adults. This has evolved into a fun project that involves the participation of a large number of people.
