私は、グラースというフランスの香水産業発生の地に生を受け、代々調香師を輩出する家庭に生まれました。私で8代目になります。私の父も調香師ですから、香水と香水をつくりだすもの全てが、私にとっては生活の一部です。といっても、実際に調香師になろうと決めたのは、私が20歳の頃です。10代では自分の進む道が調香師なのだと運命づけられていることに反発し、その決められた道から自分を解き放ちたいと真剣に思ったものです。調香師という仕事の魅力は、芸術と創造に対する抑えきれない衝動とでもいいましょうか。それは私の家庭に脈々と受け継がれるものです。特に父親はそうですね。私がこの仕事をしていて楽しいと思うのは、誰かのために、そして誰かと一緒に香水を作り出せるという点です。SHISEIDOとの仕事を通じて、新しい人たちに出会い、新しい場所を訪れ、日本人の繊細さを知ることができました。今回「エバーブルーム」という香水を一緒に開発したSHISEIDOマーケティング担当の松岡さんは、日本でも普段から私の香水を纏っていてくれました。彼女は私の皮膚であり、私は彼女の鼻でした。パリと東京を度々往復しましたが、それぞれの文化と感性が行き交う質の高さと深さに、毎回胸を躍らされました。

I was born in Grasse, the birthplace of the French perfume industry, into the eighth generation of a line of perfumers. My father is a perfumer, and perfume and everything related to its creation are part of my life. That said, I actually decided to become a perfumer around the age of 20. I no doubt felt I had to free myself from the path that seemed to be mapped out for the teenager I was then. The charms of the job are really the artistic, creative impulse that I was accustomed to in my family, especially with my father. What I enjoy is creating something for and with other people. Working with Shiseido, I have met new faces, seen new places, and discovered the Japanese sensitivity. When we developed “Ever Bloom”, I worked with Mrs Matsuoka, who already wore my fragrances in Japan. She was my skin, and I was her nose. All the trips to and from Paris and Tokyo have been fascinating in their intensity and the quality of the exchange of cultures and sensitivities.

No, but what's important to me is the desire to do a job that isn't like working. I consider myself very lucky to be a perfumer: it has satisfied my desire to work with other people, meet new people and open my horizons. It's a profession full of adventures, discoveries, encounters and travel.

私が調香する香水は主に女性向けですので、女性が私のひらめきの源です。女性たちの身のこなしや立ち居振る舞い、ライフスタイル、服装などからインスピレーションを受けます。ある時は空想上の女性だったり、またある時は仕事で一緒に働いたことのある実在の女性だったりします。「エバーブルーム」を調香する際には、官能的でありながら爽やかで清々しい香りをつくりたいと思っていました。意識したわけではないのですが、なぜか女性のうなじが浮かびました。きめ細かく、柔らかな白い肌。優美な曲線。頭部を支える気丈さと、か弱さを併せ持つ、女性の首。純潔と官能の融合。この感じを表現するために私が使ったのは、薄い花びらでした。まさに繊細で官能的。その時、私の脳裏にひらめいた女性は、まだ顔も見たことのない、でもその白い肌と優美な首が私の記憶にしっかりと刻み込まれている女性でした。

As I mainly create fragrances for women, it is women that inspire me. By their attitudes, the way they live, and dress. My inspiration can come from an imaginary person or a real person I have met, whom I associate with a project. For “Ever Bloom”, I wanted to create a sensual, fresh perfume. Without really thinking about it, I spontaneously imagined the back of a woman's neck. Fine, soft white skin, a graceful curve, the pride in the way the head is held and the aura of fragility. A mixture of purity and sensuality. To express the way it disturbed me, I worked with light petals – both tender and sensual. My inspiration was a woman whose face I hadn't seen, but whose white skin and graceful neck are imprinted in my memory.

まず、ひらめきがなくてはなりません。そして感じたものを嗅覚の世界に落とし込める新鮮な材料の選別が必要です。さらに「時間」の要素も欠かせません。発想を生み出して、修正し、それをまた発展させ、さらに手を加える時間です。もし香水をつくりだす過程に贅沢な要素というものがあるならば、完成までに時間をかけられるという点でしょうね。それに、もちろん新鮮な材料をふんだんに使える点も贅沢です。「エバーブルーム」には2年の歳月をかけ、2000回に及ぶ微調整を行いました。そうした時間だけでなく、パリと東京という遠距離の要素もありました。このように時間をかけ、距離をまたぐと、特別な感情が醸成され、地球の裏側で起きていることに思いを馳せるようになります。私たちはこの香りでSHISEIDOの感性を表したかったのです。

To start with, you need the inspiration. Then comes the selection of raw materials that will illustrate the idea in olfactory terms. Then there's the time factor, the time to develop the idea, to alter it, to build on it again, and then change it again. If there is a luxury in the creative process, it is having the time you need to see it through. The other luxury, of course, is being able to use an abundance of fresh materials. We worked on this fragrance for two years and there were some 2,000 modifications. In addition to the development time, there was the distance between Paris and Tokyo. All this creates an emotional setting, which allows you be impregnated with what's happening on the other side of the world. We wanted to mold the fragrance to the Shiseido sensitivity.
