みなさん、それぞれのユニークさ、そしてフレッシュな美しさの持ち主。水原佑果さんはとってもプレイフルでプロフェッショナル。今回の撮影で、１カットだけ撮り直しをお願いしたのですが、すばらしい笑顔で最後まで生き生きとチャレンジしてくれました。同じようにヴィヴィアン雅さんも撮影現場にエネルギーをもたらしてくれたし、撮影中はフォトジェニックでありがならも、いま彼女が興味あることやスクールライフを楽しそうに私に教えてくれたりもしました。満島みなみさん特有の美しく落ち着いたポーズは、今回の特集ページでも際立っていると思います。

Each has her own unique and fresh beauty. Yuka Mizuhara was very playful and professional. We had to re-shoot one of the outfits, but she managed to stay lively the entire time with a big smile on her face. Vivianne Miyabi brought great energy to the shoot as well...talking about her exciting and lovely school life while remaining photogenic. Minami Mitsushima had more grown up feeling than before. I think her beautiful and calm gesture shines very well throughout the spreads. It was such a wonderful experience for me to work with these 3 amazing models again.

今回の特集のコンセプトであるギフトは「記憶」と深く関係しています。私はいつも記憶がどのように変化していくかということに興味をもっていたし、時が経つにつれ、記憶がかたちづくられることもあります。そこで今回は、モノクロとカラーの特徴的な視覚要素を使って、記憶の変化という概念そのものに取り組んでみたかったんです。モノクロ写真からは、ノスタルジックな感じが自然と喚起させられます。一方で、カラーで捉えた顔や体のラインはポエティックで、これは私たちはつねにある一瞬を、実際の出来事からかすかに、ずれたかたちで記憶していることを表していると思うんです。

The concept of gift in this story was tied with the idea of 'memory'. I was always interested in how memories can become distorted and sometimes even invented as time goes by. So I wanted to play on the very idea of memory distortion by using some distinctive visual elements combining black and white with color. Black and white photographs could automatically evoke sense of nostalgia. Meanwhile, the colored faces and outlines of the bodies are a poetic expression of the fact that we remember certain moments slightly differently from the original events.

今さら言うまでもないことですが、フォトショップはイメージを創ることに関わる全ての人にとって、面白いツールです。ですが多くの場合、私は、撮影現場の環境が許すのであれば、実際に撮影したカットを現場でプリントして、コラージュを施すように、イメージをつくるほうが好きなんです。そのほうが私自身とっても楽しめますしーー私だけでなく、現場にいる方や制作に関わる全ての方たちにも、このプロセスを楽しんでもらいたいと思っていますーー撮影現場では、こうゆうクリエイティブなアクティビティをみんなでやると、ぜったいに良い作品がつくれるんです。それから、撮影からも少し離れることができて、もっとイメージ全体について考える時間をもつことができます。
記憶に対する私の考えというものは、今回の撮影で一度撮影した写真を切り抜いたように、アナログのプロセスを今回の撮影に取り込むことでしたーー「過去」をトラックバックして、その上に「今」をレイヤーのように重ねていき、それらを最終的なイメージとしてカメラで捉えました。

Photoshop is an interesting tool for any image maker to push boundaries needless to say. However, most of the time, I prefer to use actual print-outs of photos taken during the shoot to create collage-like images onsite if conditions allow. It is simply more fun to do it this way - hopefully not just for me but for everyone involved... I think we end up with a much better end product when creative activities happen during the shoot with everyone involved. Also, it gives me some time to take a moment away from the shoot to think about the overall image.
I express my interpretation of 'memory' by incorporating an analog process into the shoot such as by using cut outs from photographs previously shot during the session - I was tracking back into the 'past' and layering on the 'present' then using my camera to capture this as the final image.
