“Time Shared with My Daughter”

from 1976 through 1981

This column was written by Paris-based journalist Kazuko Masui. It was written from the point of view of a mother who watched every day as her healthy, spirited daughter grew up. Later, the columns were written not only by Kazuko Masui but other authors as well. These columns give us a rare glimpse into what figures such as Kyoko Kishida and Minako Oba were like as mothers.

“Topography of Myself” serialized
from the 1990s through to 2011

Even if there’s no family, the HOME is a place that is rich with memories. The long-running “Topography of Myself” introduces places that hold memories for artists from various fields. We often say that people have history, but it’s interesting how the places chosen by the artists as the root of their being are all different and unique. So, where is your HOME?

“My Mother” in the February 1974 issue

Although these were not serialized, the magazine also ran special features on family with particular focus on mothers. Musician Kan Mikami, Kyoto University professor Yuji Aida, literary critic Shun Akiyama, manga artist Fujio Akatsuka, and writer Shotaro Ikenami all contributed essays about their mothers. These collections of short short essays show an interesting and varied array of the image of mothers.
