美を伝えることばの力と芸術性を高めたいという想いから、1983年、その年のもっとも優れた1冊の詩集を称える「現代詩花椿賞」が誕生しました。

本賞の創設に尽力し、選考委員も務められた詩人で評論家、仏文学者の宗左近が創設時の想いをこのように記しています。
Mr. Sakon So, a poet, critic, and scholar of French literature, who was also a member of the selection committee and played a key role in establishing the award, described his sentiments at the time of establishment in the following way:

第一回の受賞作は安西均の『暗喩の夏』。以降、現代詩花椿賞では吉増剛造や谷川俊太郎、大岡信、高橋睦郎、高貝弘也、野村喜和夫、木坂涼、小池昌代など日本の現代詩史を支える詩人の作品を選出してきました。
