This is around the time when features started appearing about lipstick that was not about lip care, but about color. This project focused on matching the color of lips and nails. Nowadays, all sorts of color variations are accepted and it’s possible to strike a beautiful balance between contrasting colors, but the tone-on-tone is best to achieve an elegant look. 永井智雄「大衆に訴える唇」

『花椿』初の唇の大特集。誌面には、江間章子による詩作や古代彫刻にみるアルカイック・スマイルに関する論考、銀幕スターの表現力のある唇を語るコラムなどで構成されています。その中でも特に注目したいのが劇団俳優座で活躍した俳優、永井智雄が執筆したこちらの企画。当時の時の人、ケネディ元大統領夫人やオランダ女王らの名を挙げ、意志を切々と語るときの唇の魅力について考察しています。サガンの受け口をひたむきな情感の表れ、と評するあたりが斬新な視点です。

Tomoo Nagai’s “Lips that Appeal to the Masses”

This is Hanatsubaki’s first major special feature on lips. A poem by Shoko Ema, an article on the archaic smile of ancient sculptures, and a column about the expressive lips of movie stars are some of what is contained within the pages of the magazine. The piece that we especially want to draw your attention to is this article written by Tomoo Nagai who was actively involved as a stage actor at Haiyuza Theater Company. He focuses on Jackie Kennedy, Queen Beatrix and other women of the hour of the same period and studied the attractive quality of their lips when they spoke their minds. The way he describes Sagan’s protruding lip and jaw as a display of earnest emotion is exquisite.

寺山修司「サクランボを
食べながら考えた三つのロマンス」

このタイミングで発売された口紅「チェリーピンク」に合わせた特集の冒頭です。嵐のように日本中を駆け巡った東京オリンピック・ブームの翌年ということで、スポーティーからロマンティックなムードに移行しているようすがうかがえます。

Shuji Terayama’s “Three Romantic Tales I Thought of While Eating Cherries”

This was the opening to the special feature that coincided with the release of the Cherry Pink lipstick. It was the year after the Tokyo Olympics swept through Japan like a whirlwind and the mood appeared to have moved from sports to romance.
