“Tenchi Sozo” is a creation story written by science fiction writer Mariko Ohara. It’s a fantastical short story of an ultimate weapon called “Kare” that was created to destroy the immortal empire of machines, but develops its own free will and eventually the awareness of being alive. It’s a story that keeps you wanting more.

スザンナ・ハウのサターン・リターンズ

ソフィア・コッポラ監督作品『ヴァージン・スーサイズ』の制作に全面的に関わったことで知られるエディターのスザンナ・ハウ。今は写真家に転身し、ブランドのキャンペーンビジュアルなどを手掛けている彼女ですが、ミレニアムの年には『花椿』に、20代後半に訪れるという受難の時期、サターン・リターンズについてのエッセイを寄稿していました。ある種の科学的な因果を感じさせる内容です。

Susanna Howe’s Saturn Returns
in the January 2000 issue

Editor Susanna Howe is known for her work on The Virgin Suicides film directed by Sophia Coppola. She has now transitioned her focus from editor to photography and is engaged in shooting visual marketing campaigns for luxury brands, but in the millennium issue she contributed an essay to Hanatsubaki about Saturn returns, a period in one’s late twenties that is marked by obstacles and challenges. Her writing feels as if it is based on a type of scientific causality.
